We are a guesthouse on Dhigurah, so you should read this knowing we have a stake in the answer. That is precisely why we have written the section on who should not come here. Choosing the wrong local island is a more expensive mistake than choosing the wrong guesthouse.
Dhigurah for a long natural beach, year-round whale sharks and a quieter island with a long, beautiful natural sandbank area.
Maafushi for the shortest, cheapest transfer, the widest choice of guesthouses and the most activity options. It's also a short transfer away from Male' City
Ukulhas for cleanliness and calm; It has the underwater beauty of Ari Atoll, a thriving eco-conscious community.
Thoddoo for a balanced diversity of beautiful beaches and agriculture. Thoddoo is well known for its farms (especially the watermelons)
Dhangethi for close proximity to whale sharks with more industrial diversity on the island. Dhangethi has beautiful beaches as well but does not have as long of a bikini beach as Dhigurah. However, it makes up for it with boatyards and friendly locals.

Dhigurah vs Maafushi
Maafushi is great for solo and adventure travelers, where it’s cheap to tag along with large groups for excursions. There are also lots of options for going out to eat, easy to take day trips to the capital and new additions such as a zipline. However, the island has been so focused on tourism that there is little on the island that hasn’t been tailored tourists.
Dhigurah trades all of that for two things Maafushi cannot match: roughly three kilometres of natural beach ending in a sand spit, and a position inside the South Ari Marine Protected Area (home to manta rays and whale sharks), and ease of safety/care for families.
While operators in Maafushi offer full day trips for whale shark excursions, we typically recommend have 2 to 3 days available on your trip to look for whale sharks as a spotting is not guaranteed.
- Pick Dhigurah if whale sharks or an empty beach are the reason for the trip, and you have more than three or four nights. Ari atoll also has better scuba dive sites.
- Pick Maafushi if your trip is short, your flight lands late, you want the cheapest week, or you want choice and company in the evening.
Dhigurah vs Ukulhas
Ukulhas is small and compact. It’s convenient to be able to walk anywhere on the island without having to rent bikes or buggies. There are plenty of options for boutique hotels but the island has been almost fully built up, with little greenery left.
Recently, with operators from busier islands moving to Ukulhas, it has gotten much busier than before and it’s not uncommon to hear the sentiment that it is turning into a mini Maafushi. However, the island is still a lot more laidback than Maafushi and provides plenty of entertainment in the evening.
Dhigurah has nature on its side, with much more greenery and a massive beach. However, with the island being bigger, it’s not as easy to get across the island without bicycles, motorbikes or buggy rides.
- Pick Dhigurah if you want whale sharks encounters, more nature and a more quiet stay
- Pick Ukulhas if you want the lively, local island experience on a small, cozy island where everything is a short walk away.
Dhigurah vs Thoddoo
Thoddoo is a beautiful island, with plenty of greenery and gorgeous beaches. It is an agricultural island in North Ari Atoll.
Thoddoo is also close to other islands such as Rasdhoo and Ukulhas, making it a better destination for folks looking to visit multiple islands on their trip. The farms on thoddoo are more well-known for their watermlons but also include papayas, bananas, gourds and other tropical fruits/vegetables.
Thoddoo’s neighboring island Rasdhoo used to be a popular dive spot for schools of hammerhead sharks. However, they are no longer spotted as often and the area isn’t particularly known for megafauna anymore.
Dhigurah is provides a longer beach but the few, small plots of farm pale in comparison to Thoddoo. However, being on located on the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA), Dhigurah is able to provide more encounters with larger marine life (whale sharks, manta rays, etc.).
- Pick Dhigurah if a kore private beach and year-round whale sharks are what you came for.
- Pick Thoddoo if you want a shorter transfer, want to explore a unique local farming island and don’t mind having a busier bikini beach in peak season.
Dhigurah vs Dhangethi
Dhangethi is our neighbour in South Ari, so the usual differentiator disappears: it is just as well placed for whale sharks as we are, and trips from both islands work the same water.
What separates them is scale. Dhangethi is the smallest and least developed of the islands on this page, with the fewest guesthouses and very little in the way of eating out, and that is exactly why some people choose it. It is the most traditional feeling island of the five, with easy transfer to/from Dhigurah.
Dhigurah’s advantages over it are the beach, which is in a different class, and a bit more choice in rooms and places to eat. If the appeal of a local island is that almost nothing has been built for you, Dhangethi delivers that well, with an active boatyard and a vibrant local community.
- Pick Dhigurah if you want the long beach and a little more choice, with the same whale shark access.
- Pick Dhangethi if you want an island that doesn’t have too much tourism, has industries outside of tourism and are fine with a smaller/busier beach during peak season.
Compared attribute by attribute
Beach
This is Dhigurah’s clearest advantage. Most local islands have a usable patch of beach; Dhigurah has a beach you can walk along for twenty minutes. If your mental image of the Maldives is empty white sand stretching away from you, that image is closer to Dhigurah than to Maafushi.
Who will notice the difference most?
Anyone planning long walks, photography, or simply sitting somewhere without neighbours. If you intend to spend most of your time on boats or in restaurants, the beach difference will matter far less than the transfer difference.
Snorkelling, diving and whale sharks
Dhigurah’s position inside the protected area is the substantive point: whale shark trips are a short run rather than a long day trip. From Maafushi, whale shark excursions are generally full-day expeditions into South Ari, the same water we are already in. Dhangethi is also in SAMPA and also well placed for whale shark excursions. See how we run whale shark trips and diving in South Ari.
Transfers
Maafushi wins this outright on proximity to Malé, which also makes it the most forgiving if your international flight lands late. Dhigurah is roughly two hours by speedboat with a domestic-flight alternative via Maamigili. Our transport page and the transfer guide spell out the connection logic.
Food, atmosphere and local life
Maafushi has the most places to eat and the most visible tourism economy. Dhigurah has fewer options and a quieter village. Which is better depends entirely on whether “choice” or “calm” is the word you want from your holiday. None of the five serves alcohol, they are all inhabited islands.
Cost
Maafushi is usually cheapest, driven by competition and the short transfer. Dhigurah sits in the middle. The transfer is often the biggest single difference between the two totals rather than the room rate, see the packages page and our budget guide.
Couples, solo travellers and families
- Couples. Dhigurah or Ukulhas for quiet; Maafushi if you want more to do in the evening.
- Solo travellers. Maafushi is the easiest place to meet people and join group excursions cheaply.
- Families. Dhigurah’s space and shallow water work well; see our family rooms and lofts. Thoddoo also provides easy access to the beach, tours of farms and various excursions for families.
Choose Dhigurah if…
- Whale sharks are the reason for the trip.
- You want a long, quiet beach more than a choice of restaurants.
- You are happy for the island itself to be the entertainment.
- You are travelling with children who need room to roam.
- Your flight lands in the morning or early afternoon.
Do not choose Dhigurah if…
- You are only in the Maldives for two or three nights. The transfer eats too much of a short trip; Maafushi or another island in Male’ atoll makes more sense.
- Your flight lands late at night and you cannot add a Malé overnight. You will not reach us the same day.
- You want a wide choice of restaurants and bars. There is no nightlife, and no alcohol (even on a floating bar, which islands such as Maafushi offer).
- You easily get seasick and would rather not fly domestically. Two hours at sea in the wet monsoon is a real consideration. You could fly to Maammigili or take a seaplane to LUX* but it would still require a short speedboat transfer.
- You want a resort experience, overwater villas, room service, a spa menu as long as your arm. Book a resort as that would be a much better fit for your ideal vacation.
Combining islands
Island-hopping is popular and works well if you respect the logistics. Allow a full day for each move, check ferry and speedboat days before committing, and avoid scheduling a move on the day of an international flight. A common, sensible shape is one busier island and one quiet one, for instance Maafushi then Dhigurah, rather than three islands in a week.
Frequently asked questions
Which Maldives local island is best for whale sharks?
Dhigurah or Dhangethi, because both sit in South Ari Atoll beside the protected area where whale sharks are present year-round. From elsewhere it is a day trip into the same water.
Is Maafushi too touristy?
It is the most developed of the five, which is a drawback if you want quiet and an advantage if you want choice, cheap excursions and company.
Is Thoddoo better than Dhigurah?
Only if you are coming for local life and a shorter journey rather than the beach. Thoddoo is a farming island in North Ari, so whale sharks are a long day trip. Dhigurah sits on the protected area where they are present year-round.
Can I visit more than one island in a week?
Two is comfortable. Three is possible but you will spend a lot of the week on boats.
Do any of these islands serve alcohol?
No. All five are inhabited islands. Some operators run offshore options; do not assume, and do not try to import your own.
Which is best for a first Maldives trip?
If the Maldives of your imagination is an empty beach, Dhigurah. If it is maximum value and minimum travel, Maafushi.
